How can organizations make better sense of future challenges when human experience and artificial intelligence work together?
4strat and the Research Center for Information Technology (Forschungszentrum Informatik, FZI) in Karlsruhe explored this question at the "Future Meets Strategy" workshop for small and medium-sized enterprises. The focus was not only on the technologies and algorithms that support data-driven foresight, but above all on practical approaches for embedding foresight activities within organizations and on the role of people in building future-ready companies.
During a live demonstration in our Foresight Strategy Cockpit (FSC), we showed how AI can help organize large volumes of information, identify patterns, and open up new perspectives. At the same time, human judgment remains a core element of foresight work, including selecting, interpreting, and evaluating information as well as discussing and translating insights into action. These activities require an understanding of broader global developments, industry contexts, and organizational cultures, and therefore cannot simply be delegated to machines and models. The workshop clearly highlighted the value of combining algorithmic analysis with collaborative sense-making.
One recurring topic was the use of internal company data. Many participants were interested in how their existing data structures could be leveraged to make foresight more relevant to their own organizations. Our Foresight Strategy Cockpit (FSC) is designed to integrate internal databases and existing data sources when needed, allowing organizational knowledge to be systematically incorporated into foresight processes.
